Twenty Sessions:
How to change your life in under twenty visits. (Short-term therapy)
01
Keeps Sessions Goal Focused
Without a session limit, therapy often dissolves into a weekly discussion about “how my life is going”, and the apparent crisis of the moment. While the events of your life of course have some bearing on your goals, its easy to lose focus on why you came for therapy when there is a perception of unlimited time to achieve it.
02
Keeps sessions client-centered
Long-term therapist-client relationships often become very close, with the client looking forward to sharing the events of their lives with the therapist. There’s nothing wrong with that; it’s just not what we do. We want the client to focus on the relationships they share with others and with themselves, and use those relationships as a source of strength for change, instead of relying on the therapist for that inspiration.
03
Keep Clients committed
We’ve been in therapeutic relationships where, after a number of months, we’ve shared all of the interventions we have with our clients, and find ourselves relating the same material with them over and over, hoping that the client will follow through with the curriculum fully. By limiting the sessions, we’re asking the client to come to the table with a high level of commitment from the beginning.
04
Keep Therapy effective
Therapy was never meant to be forever. Its a place to safely discuss uncomfortable things and to learn new skills in order to improve your life. The therapist is there to guide you on the beginnings of your journey, not the whole trip, and any expectation otherwise can complicate your growth experience and lead to a dependent relationship.
