Self-pay helps Privacy

Insurance companies require your personal information

Working with insurance requires us to provide your personal information, as well as treatment status, and access to client notes and documentation upon their request.  How they use that information is stipulated through their company policy and federal and state regulation.

Insurance companies often require electronic filing

This means there is an electronic copy of your personal information sent from the provider, then  to an electronic payment clearing house (usually), then to the insurer.

Insurance companies require diagnosis of a Mental Health Disorder

For health insurance to pay, there has to be a “medical” problem or disorder to be treated.  That disorder becomes part of your medical records.

Self-pay eliminates the need for all of that.

Practical Therapy is privacy-focused.

We maintain self-pay client records on paper only.  They cannot be electronically hacked, and are destroyed after the minimum period required by law.

Client contact information is kept on a computer that is not connected to the internet.

Self-pay helps Performance

Working through insurance tends to constrain services to those that insurance will cover. Not everyone in in every situation will benefit from the standard 50 minute office visit.  Self-Pay allows for the flexibility for working outside the Box.
